Nic (Nicholas, Nicola) Marchetti, my grandfather, was born in the Piemonte region of Northern Italy and moved to the amusingly named town of Port Wine in Sierra County, California in 1889 to mine gold.

Nic spoke Italian, French, English and, according to one family story, Chinese.

For many years I have been searching for his hometown in Italy. He was never more specific than "Piemonte" when talking about his birthplace.

In 1899 he married my grandmother, Annie Cassidy, and had three sons.

Around 1907 the family moved to San Francisco where Nic worked for Pacific Gas and Electric company. He died in 1946, before I was born.

Nic didn't talk much about Italy, but he never changed either the Italian spelling or pronunciation (ch = k) of Marchetti, even though it would have been very easy to anglicize the name...or pick a completely new one.

I would very much like to know more about him and his life in Piemonte. I have searched records here in the United States and in Italy looking for a record of his birthplace, but I have found nothing.

If you are sitting in Piemonte in northern Italy, working on filling in your own family tree, maybe you are wondering whatever happened to that uncle your grandfather talked about who went to California to mine gold and was never heard from again. If so, please send me an email at marymarchetti@sbcglobal.net.
